The Christmas Drop-In is a longstanding tradition at Town Hall and, as always, it was wonderful to see so many of our friends and neighbors at this year’s event. Once again, the Town of Seabrook Island held a toy drive in support of the Toys for Tots program. The Toys for Tots program was established in 1947 by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and has been managed by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation since 1991. Each year, the program collects and distributes toys to children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas. Since its founding in 1947, the Toys for Tots program has collected and distributed more than 500 million toys to children across the country. Spearheaded in the early 2000’s by former Town Councilman Bob Ferguson and former Town Administrator Randy Pierce – both of whom served in the U.S. Marines Corps – the Town of Seabrook Island has supported the Toys for Tots program for nearly 20 years. This year, our donation boxes were overflowing as residents donated more than 100 new, unwrapped toys between collection points at Town Hall and the Lake House. Following the Christmas Drop-In, members of town staff brought all of the toys to our local Toys for Tots office at Citadel Mall, where they will be sorted and delivered to children in the Charleston area. We would like to thank our residents for their generosity, and for supporting this year’s toy drive. We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and a safe, happy and healthy new year! The National Weather Service is forecasting moderate to potentially heavy rainfall in the Charleston region on Saturday night (December 8th) and into Sunday morning (December 9th). Heavy rain and wind are expected to generate higher than normal tides, which have the potential to cause tidal flooding on Seabrook Island Road and other low lying areas. Rain is expected to taper off on Sunday afternoon.
The Post and Courier reports: "Northeast winds from 20 to 30 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph will accompany some 2 to 3 inches of rain." It is possible that Sunday's high tide may "peak above 8 feet - a height that can swamp low-lying streets, can undermine properties as well as exacerbate erosion." [Read the full article here] While wintry condition are expected to blanket large parts of North and South Carolina this weekend, the current forecast does not anticipate any snow or ice in our area. High temperatures in the Charleston area are expected to reach the low to mid 50's on Saturday and Sunday. High Tide Predictions (NOAA Kiawah Bridge)

October 3rd, the Seabrook Island Planning Commission considered a request from Atlantic Partners II, LLC (the "Applicant"), to grant an encroachment permit for a new driveway on Seabrook Island Road. The purpose of this encroachment permit request is to provide access to and from Seabrook Island Road for a proposed 200-unit senior living facility adjacent to the Freshfields Village Development.
The Planning Commission discussed this request on four separate occasions: July 18th, August 15th, September 26th and October 3rd. In addition, the applicants participated in a town-hosted public informational meeting on August 7th, which was held at the Seabrook Island Club and attended by more than 200 residents. By a vote of 3-1, the Planning Commission approved the Applicant's request to grant an encroachment permit, subject to the following conditions:
At this time, the applicant may accept the conditions and move forward with the encroachment permit, appeal the Planning Commission’s decision to Seabrook Island Town Council for de novo review, or withdraw its request.
